Heidi Rabben, senior curator with the Contemporary Jewish Museum, talks about her favorite piece from the upcoming “Levi Strauss – A History of America Style” exhibit coming in 2020.
Transcript
I have many favorite pieces in the
exhibition and there’s so many exciting
things for me one that really is so
significant and stands out is the
segment of the AIDS quilt that we are
going to have on display for the
exhibition both in terms of its scale
and in terms of the moment the historic
moment that it captures I grew up at a
time where as a child the AIDS quilt
traveled to my hometown became familiar
with that and I think it also is so
symbolic of the element of social
responsibility that has always been
present in the Levi’s brand and in the
company it’s always been a leader
specifically around the AIDS crisis in
the United States in particular but
globally and a leader in terms of
philanthropic involvement as a company
so to me that piece really symbolizes
all of these different values that the
company has and also has you know
particular relevance here in San
Francisco where the AIDS quilt was begun
