Mercado Global

Mercado Global is a cutting-edge nonprofit, Fair Trade organization with an innovative approach to fighting poverty and empowering indigenous women in Guatemala’s highlands by connecting their artisan cooperatives to sales opportunities in the U.S. on an unprecedented scale.
Their sales and training programs help Guatemalan mothers break the cycle of poverty and gain the skills and support they need to address other local challenges. Mercado Global’s distinctive Fair Trade collections demonstrate the power of partnership to change the world, one purchase at a time.

the big idea behind Mercado global is
that by connecting women in rural Latin
America to US market we help them gain
access to the income they need to have
their families out of poverty we found
that cooperatives are really a
tremendous tool from promoting the
empowerment of women

down with a printer artisan and we’ll
come up with scars that draw on the
traditional techniques and colors and
motifs of the communities where apparent
artisans live but fit the design needs
of Levi Strauss and is ready for the US
market and that by bringing design into
it we could design to press points that
it would allow us to pay a real living
wage that would really allow moms to

agora robocco i think that what we have
with the Levi Strauss foundation is a
chain of teaching so Levi’s has very
much taught us the importance of asset
development and the importance of the
development of savings and helping to
break the cycle of poverty in rural
Latin America and as they helped us
identify how important that that that
was that bringing in income was just the
first step but that we had to really
make sure that that increased income was
also going towards increased savings
that helped us then turn around and
teach that to our partner artisans
